Just a little out of place, slightly out of context—details that subtly contradict the overall meaning of the image: this is the theme of the photographs I’m presenting here, taken during several trips in Italy and abroad.
In fact, when traveling—in this country or elsewhere—one often visits small towns that the vicissitudes of history, the economy, or other factors have gradually stripped of their central importance, emptying them of their inhabitants, with an effect that reminds me of images of places that have suffered a nuclear catastrophe—Chernobyls of the soul.
In these places, however, one may come across something bizarre amid the general desolation: some small, unintentionally ironic detail, an element of bad taste that spoils the image, contradictory messages, or absurd juxtapositions that an eye attuned to this sort of thing can transform into an evocative image.
