Curves and Contrast: An Abstract Study in Shape

AAP Magazine #59: Shapes celebrates the magazine’s 59th issue with a global exploration of photography built around one deceptively simple idea: shape. Not as a formal exercise, but as a way of seeing. The photographs gathered here treat form, geometry, and structure as active forces in the image — elements that direct attention, set pace, and quietly shape how a story is read.

1st Place winner: Tom Zimberoff (USA)

There really isn’t much to say, I’m afraid, about this small portfolio of nudes, other than I like to call it ReNude because was a renewal of sorts at the time I put it together.
No Looking Back, for instance was one of the first photographs I ever made, in the early 1970s, on what was, then, my new Rolleiflex. I was probably nineteen or twenty years old. I hadn’t done much more in that genre until the nineties; hence “ReNude.”

2nd place winner: Matthew Garbutt (United Kingdom)

‘Unit of Work: 20 Industrial Estates’ explores the functional architecture of modern industrial and retail parks. These utilitarian landscapes offer a stark, minimalist palette of sharp lines, geometric shapes, and vibrant colour blocks. By framing these structures into urban still-life compositions, the series uncovers an unintended, quiet beauty hidden within our everyday environments.

3rd place winner: Nicolas Castermans (France)
