The Gangasagar Mela that takes place in West Bengal, every year on the auspicious day of makar Sankranti, is one of the largest congregations of Hindu Pilgrims in India. Commoners, huge in number, flock to the southern part of Bengal where the holy river Ganges joins the Bay of Bengal.
People from not only all over the state and the adjacent states but far and beyond, travel all the way to take a holy dip here which, they consider, can get them rid of all their sins. The trouble they take to complete this journey is a vivid contrast of the trust and peace of mind that reflect on their faces. This series of photographs is a documentation of their experience.
