Born in 1966 in Soweto, Andrew Tshabangu has studied at a number of institutions, amongst them the Institute of Advancement for Journalism (1998) and at the Alexandra Community art centre in Johannesburg (1991). He was awarded a scholarship by the Gasworks Art Studios in London (1998) and taught photography at the Children’s Photography Workshop (1995) and at the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg (1998-1999).



When I look at the twenty photographers which make up this Metropolis edition of PRIVATE, it’s not what makes the cities different from each other that strikes me, in fact I’d say that these big cities are very similar to each other, not in their detail, faces, bodies and scenes, but in the variety of emotions which they arouse and which we all experience.
