Chau: A folk martial art – photo essay by Arunima Mondal

‘Chau’ is a traditional dance drama popular in the Chotanagpur plateau area of Eastern India. In 2010 Chau dance is inscribed in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. There are three recognized styles of Chau: Purulia Chau of West Bengal, Seraikella Chau of Jharkhand and Mayurbanj Chau of Orissa.

The ecstatic Gomira dance masks of Dinajpur district have ensued from animistic practices of the Desi and Poli communities of the Rajbangshis. Every village has its own Gomira dance troupe. The dancers are all male, without exception, and portray one or many characters, male, female or animal.
