Decoding – Where there are …

Someone I know wanted to part with items she had accumulated over time: postcards, souvenirs, trinkets, books, magazines, utensils, odds and ends, documents, as well as objects that had been in her family for several generations. Over time, I found myself with a collection; like an anthropologist, I methodically photographed each piece representing a fragment of her history. Like a puzzle, this assembly formed the narrative of multiple lives.

Furthermore, each familiar object came to life through sound recordings, narrated by the original owner. From these stories emerged the source, the symbolism, the intimacy, the origins of each element of their existence.

Beyond simply accumulating these material traces, these objects significantly contribute to the understanding of world history and bear witness to our collective memory. One can narrate the story of each object as one makes use of every available resource.
