It was the most expensive infrastructure project of the Soviet era. The BAM, the Baikal-Amur Mainline, is the railway that crosses Eastern Russia, running for more than 4000 kilometres, passing through remote villages with no amenities and certainly no healthcare facilities.

For the people of these villages, it can take a day or more to reach the nearest hospital, so the authorities decided to set up a medical train, the Matvey Mudrov, which stops at almost every village along the line. For the people it is more than just a mobile hospital; it is their sole point of contact with the rest of Russia, a western Russia that has surged ahead over the past decade, leaving them behind.

William Daniels was born in 1977. His work revolves around social issues and humanitarian concerns mostly focusing on isolated or weakened communities. He began his career photographing street children in the Philippines, winning the Social and Documentary Photography Prize in 2004. His long term work on malaria, shot in 7 countries, was exhibited on the Pont des Arts in Paris in 2008 and won a World Press Photo award in 2007 and a POYi in 2008.
