[A]s part of the program “RESTER PARTIR, le voyage impossible” co-produced by Marseille-Provence 2013, after the work of Hai Zhang about the evolution of the urban landscape and social contrasts in China, Voies Off Gallery presents Shelter, a photographic project of the dutch artist Henk Wildschut.

Nominated for the 2011 Voies Off Prize, the series Shelter is the result of a documentary photographic project about Calais refugees, exiled from the Middle East or Africa, in search of a better life in Britain.

By focusing on something as ‘trivial’ as the refugees’ ‘shelters’, the artist hope to provoke a more universal compassion in the viewer. Railing against a journalistic approach that focuses on the so-called ‘story’ of these wretched fellows, the artist highlights how their dignity is expressed in inhumane conditions.
