New Shepherds in Sardinia

Alessandro Toscano, New Shepherds in Sardinia, from PRIVATE 51 â€“ Global Report 2, pp. 70 -73

A reportage made about Sardinian farms which employ foreign people who from the background keep have transformed a profession which has always characterized the Sardinian economy and culture. The reasons are various. The milk prices reaching an all-time low, the draught, the old-fashioned bureaucratic, political system and above all, a complete lack of home manual labour, have all brought hard times to hundreds of animal breeding companies throughout Sardinia. It is for this precise reason that they now find themselves hiring young people or entire families who come from Africa, East Europe or Asia, thus splitting the generational continuity which had characterized the Sardinian shepherd figure for centuries.
