[M]akoko is a small settlement located in Lagos (South of Nigeria). It is a settlement dominated by immigrants from Cotonou in Benin Republic. They have inhabited this area of space on water for over thirty years and are mainly French speaking. They have been increasing in number and have spread, taking up more space and constructing more structures on water. Some of these structures are duplexes, self-contained accommodations or two storey buildings, all on water. These houses built by these Benin immigrants are surprisingly durable, if you consider the rather low standard materials used in erecting them.
