[T]he Athenians effectively marks the bounds of my career as a photographer, which began 18 years ago, in the darkroom of my old fellow-student at the POS Stathis Triantis. The Athenians of these photographs have not presented themselves by virtue of some purpose or plan; it has not been their purpose to record or to investigate with exactitude the basic features of a resident of this city; they have made no attempt to sketch their character. Anyway, this character could never have taken shape in my brain, still less have been portrayed by images. These Athenians are simply fragments of my life.
