Photographers Archives: Dieter Telemans

Dieter Telemans (www.dietertelemans.com), “I was born in Bujumbura in 1971, and lived in Burundi, where my parents worked for the Belgian foreign ministry, until I was 18. I grew up in a closed white boy’s environment, never questioning Burundi’s turbulent politics or the difficult life of its population. On moving ‘home’ to Belgium, the only way I could enjoy the greyness was by making photographs of it. I worked as a photographer for the newspaper De Morgen for seven years. Returning to Africa to work, I was confronted with a totally different side of the continent, in which poverty and AIDS were rife.”
