Scott Alger: Everywhere @ Once
05 September – 15 September 2006
(un)Fashion - Scott Alger Everywhere @ Once
.

Scott Alger: Everywhere @ Once To celebrate Fashion Week in New York, PhotoGraphic Gallery and projekt are pleased to announce the upcoming exhibit: (un)Fashion, featuring the work of photographer/performance artist Scott Alger. projekt director Andrew Lockhart is the exhibition curator. City of Peace, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering teenagers to create safe, healthy, peaceful lives and communities, will receive a portion of all sales at this exhibition. Courtesy of online charity auction website BenefitEvents.com, all photos offered at the gallery will be sold via auction. The auction will open online on Tuesday August 29 and continue through Sunday September 17 at 10 PM EST. Guests visiting the gallery will also be able to register and place their initial bids on-site.
Applying a variety of photographic techniques, Alger combines performance and photo-lab techniques to create images that are at once iconic, contemporary, and visually captivating. Alger records moments both candid and designed, usually in hyper-real social moments combined with staged scenes.
Alger’s style, titled by the artist “Lasar”, evolved when he began to record parties with his 1950’s Mamiya Flex. Using an open lens, Alger recorded light streams from the busy movement of party-goers - the chaos, milling and energetic ambiance of these nights out – drawing the viewer into the party and heightening the visceral effect.
The finished unique photoplastic prints, in addition to their immediate documentary value, exist as magnificent objects, glowing and blurred, intricate and masterfully developed. Presented as scroll-like tableaus up to 28 feet long, Alger offers the viewer a narrative journey populated by a wide variety of people who, individually, become part of the overall dramatic structure of his photos. In this way, Alger straddles the line between performance and painterly-photographic process, with captivating ambiguity.
For Everywhere @ Once, Alger assembles a review of his work from performances and events between 2003 and 2006, along with a site-specific performance titled Clearly Real on the night of the exhibition opening. Guests at the opening will have a unique opportunity to see Alger’s work, and participate in the process. Scott will also offer his “Lasar” portrait services the night of the opening; a portion of commission proceeds will benefit City of Peace
Alger has previously shown with the Galerie Bergstub’l in Berlin, the Utah Arts Alliance in Salt Lake City, and the Westbeth Gallery.
